The latest additions to our Glass Tag family of passive contactless RFID transponders - Glass Tag Ultra and Glass Tag Mini - are opening customers' eyes to what a "big deal" small can be for animal identification and industry and logistics applications.
These tiny units, the smallest in our Glass Tag line, are made possible through HID Global's breakthrough chip-handling capability that enables us to process micro-sized chips that are less than 0.3 square millimeters - up to 75 percent smaller than previous generations. Today, HID can mount antennas to the tiniest integrated low-frequency chips available.... and our patented HID direct bonding technology is facilitating the development of products that deliver exceptional size-to-performance ratios.
Our exclusive ability to handle the new generation miniature chips enables the production of tiny tags that still deliver reliable read range performance. In fact, HID glass tags outperform other glass tags of similar sizes by up to 20 percent.
How little can we get? One Glass Tag Ultra version is just 0.08 inches (2.1 millimeters) in diameter, and 0.35 inches (34 millimeters) long. The new Glass Tag Mini is a mere 0.05 inches (1.4 millimeters) in diameter, 0.31 inches (8 millimeters) in length, and weighs just one-thousandth of an ounce (0.03 grams). In other words, a Glass Tag Mini is smaller than a grain of rice.
These glass tags were designed for subcutaneous implantation for improved acceptance within the animal identification segment. Smaller glass tags are less intrusive. And, uncompromised read range performance reduces trauma to animals during scanning. Application areas include production management systems for fisheries; laboratory test animals, including mice and rats; and identification for small pets, such as cats, little dogs and ferrets.
For industry and logistics applications, Glass Tag Mini transponders can be easily inserted or molded into a variety of materials to enable automated asset identification and management applications using RFID. Minute units may be used to tag very small components and they enable more covert tag placement.
